Zodiac Killer vs. Smiley Face Killer Suspected Smiley Face Killer Deaths Happening on Zodiac Killer Murder Anniversaries: The day that Grant Geiselhart and Nathan Williams were first mentioned in the Duluth newspaper, Columbus Day (10-11-2004), was the exact 35th anniversary of Zodiac killing a white male named Paul Lee Stine (age 29) in San Francisco. This also happened to be Columbus Day (10-11-1969). Eric Volp from Iron Mountain, Michigan vanished just hours before Columbus Day in 2008 and was later found dead in a creek in Wisconsin. Perhaps the Smiley Face killers intentionally timed these two victims in order to get Columbus Day headlines. The Gary Snyder poem left in Duluth's Chester Creek about the deaths of young white males, was originally published in San Francisco in August 1968. This is just a few months before Zodiac would murder two young white people off of Columbus Parkway. Michael Renault Mageau (age 19) and Darlene Elizabeth Ferrin (age 22) were both shot by Zodiac on July 4, 1969. Anthony Luzio Jr (age 25) vanished in Columbus, Ohio on July 4, 2005. He was the son of a Columbus Police officer. This was the 36th anniversary of the 1969 murder. Zodiac is suspected of murdering Cheri Jo Bates (age 18) at Riverside Community College just minutes before Halloween in 1966. Chris Jenkins was murdered in Minneapolis on Halloween 2002, which was the 36th anniversary of the Bates murder. The Zodiac style "God Loves Ugly" clue left in Duluth is similar to what Zodiac put in a Halloween card in 1970. Here are some interesting connections between the Smiley Face and Zodiac killers: ZODIAC: The first contact with the killer known as Zodiac involved Columbus Parkway when the killer called the police and mentioned that they would find his victims near Columbus Parkway. Another Zodiac victim was murdered on Columbus Day. SMILEY: Many cases have Columbus connections including streets with this name, victims in Columbus, Ohio, and victims connected to Columbus Day. ZODIAC: Killer claimed that he will "change the way" that he kills people including "a few fake accidents". SMILEY: Many of the cases appear to be accidents. One of these cases was originally ruled to be an accident but later changed to homicide. ZODIAC: Killer left very cryptic clues and claimed that his name and location were in the clues. SMILEY: Very cryptic clues including possible names and locations. ZODIAC: Frequently taunted the police and used the newspaper in his killings. SMILEY: Leaves cryptic taunts for the police and incorporates newspapers into the killings. ZODIAC: Deaths happened in the San Francisco area. SMILEY: Duluth poem clue about killing young white males was originally published in a fringe San Francisco newspaper and several other clues pointing to San Francisco. ZODIAC: Leaves quotations as cryptic clues. SMILEY: Leaves quotations as cryptic clues. SMILEY & ZODIAC: Similar symbols found at Smiley death locations as to what was created by the Zodiac killer. This includes the Zodiac signature (Ridley Township, PA), the words formed in the shape of a cross (Duluth, MN), and the use of backwards letters (Ames, IA). NOTE: The graffiti in Ridley Township was found by local police detectives who had concerns of a possible link between a death that happened there and the Smiley Face case.
